Chatbase Review 2026
Chatbase lets you spin up a chatbot that answers from your content instead of guessing. We connected a help doc, trained a bot, and put it through real questions to see if it holds up.
What is Chatbase?
Chatbase is a no-code platform for building AI chatbots trained on your own data. Instead of a generic assistant that makes things up, you point it at your website, help docs, PDFs, or a Notion workspace, and it answers visitor questions using only that material. The typical use case is customer support and lead capture, but agencies and solo founders also use it as a site concierge or internal knowledge bot.
How it works
The flow is three steps. First, you add a data source: paste a site URL, upload files, drop in text, or connect Notion, Google Drive, or Slack. Chatbase ingests the content and builds a retrieval index. Second, you customize the bot — name, avatar, welcome message, tone, and which model powers replies (it defaults to strong general models such as GPT-4o-class). Third, you embed it with a snippet or publish it through a share link, Slack, WhatsApp, or Zapier.
Key features
- Many data sources — website, files, text, manual Q&A, Notion, Google Drive, Slack.
- Lead collection — capture emails and contact details from conversations.
- Human handoff — a teammate can take over when the bot is stuck.
- Integrations — Slack, WhatsApp, Zapier, and a REST API for custom builds.
- Multilingual answers — it can respond in the visitor’s language.
- Analytics — see top questions, fallback rate, and conversation volume.
Our hands-on build
We wired Chatbase to a small product help doc and asked it ten questions a real customer might ask: refund policy, setup steps, plan limits, and a couple of out-of-scope prompts. On in-scope questions it returned accurate, sourced-sounding answers in a few seconds. On out-of-scope questions it correctly said it didn’t have that information rather than hallucinating — which is exactly what you want from a support bot. Setup took roughly ten minutes end to end, including embedding the widget.
Pricing
Chatbase uses a free tier plus paid plans. The free tier covers a single bot with a limited monthly message count, which is enough to trial the product. Paid plans raise the message allowance and unlock lead collection, human handoff, and higher usage. Exact prices change, so check the pricing page before buying — but for a small site the entry paid plan is usually in the low double digits per month.

Who should use it
Chatbase is a strong fit for support teams, small businesses, and solo founders who get repeated questions and want a self-serve answer without hiring. Agencies can white-label it for clients. It is less suited to teams that need deep workflow automation or a fully custom model — those cases want a developer-built pipeline instead.
What we liked
- Setup is genuinely no-code and fast (about ten minutes).
- Answers stay grounded in your data and admit when they don’t know.
- Lead capture and human handoff cover real support needs.
- Free tier is enough to validate the idea before paying.
What we didn’t
- Answer quality depends entirely on the quality of your source docs.
- Heavy traffic can outgrow the lower plans quickly.
- Not a substitute for complex backend automation.
Pros & cons
The summary above holds: fast, grounded, and practical for support, but only as good as the data you feed it.
Verdict
If you answer the same questions all day, Chatbase is one of the quicker wins in this category. Build it on clean docs, keep an eye on your message volume, and it will deflect a meaningful share of repetitive tickets. Start on the free tier, then upgrade once you see real usage.
FAQ
Do I need to code to use Chatbase?
No. Chatbase is a no-code builder. You connect a data source, tweak a few settings, and embed the widget. Some API and webhook options exist for advanced users, but coding is not required.
What data can I train a Chatbase bot on?
You can use a website URL, uploaded files (PDF, DOCX, TXT, CSV), plain text, manual Q&A, Notion, Google Drive, and Slack. The bot answers from those sources.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. Chatbase has a free tier that lets you build one bot with a limited number of messages per month. Paid plans raise the message limit and add features like lead collection and human handoff.
Can the bot hand off to a human?
Yes. Chatbase supports human handoff so a team member can take over a conversation when the bot cannot answer, plus notifications and integrations with Slack and email.
How we tested
We signed up, connected a real help doc as a data source, trained the bot, and asked it ten mixed in-scope and out-of-scope questions. We judged answer accuracy, setup time, embedding, and whether it stayed grounded in the source material. No vendor paid for a ranking.
